The first Good Friday was anything but good. It was a day marked by pain, confusion, tears, anger and despair. Many people had followed a jewish rabbi by the name of Jesus and had become convinced that he would be the one to finally liberate Israel from Roman oppression. It appeared that their hopes were misplaced as the one they followed was shamefully murdered on a Roman crucifixion cross. A form of capital punishment reserved only for rebels who were not Roman citizens.
